Agricultural Science Teachers and Extension Agents Competency Needs for Teaching of Poultry Production Skills in Secondary Schools in Cross River State

Abstract

This study adopted survey design to investigate Agricultural Science teachers’ competency needs for teaching of poultry production skills in secondary schools in Cross River State of Nigeria. It was guided by three research questions and three hypotheses. A sample size of 150 Agricultural science teachers and 90 extension agents were selected from a population of 300. A questionnaire titled “Teachers Competency Needs and Teaching of Poultry Production Skill Questionnaire (TCNTPPSQ) was used to gather data. This was validated by three experts, and test re-test was used to establish its reliability. Mean, standard deviation and independent t-test were used for analysis. The findings revealed, among others, that teachers’ competency is needed for effective teaching of poultry production skills of housing, feeding and health management; and there is significant difference between the mean responses of Agricultural science teachers and extension agents in the teaching of poultry housing, but no significant difference with regards to poultry feeding and health management. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Agricultural science teachers should liaise with extension agents to improve on the competencies for teaching of poultry production skills in secondary school under the strict monitoring of the Ministries of Education and Agriculture.
