Community Participation in Sustainable Occupation and Forest Resource Utilization in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria: An Assessment of Forest Resource Depletion

Abstract

This study is on community participation in sustainable occupation and forest resource utilization in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River state. One research question and hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. The population of this study consists of all 60,000 farmers in the study area that are registered under the agricultural development programme. A purposive sampling technique was adopted in selecting six communities, while simple random sampling technique was used for this study to select a total of 200 registered farmers with the agricultural development programme of Cross River state. Sustainable Occupation Questionnaire (SOQ) was used for data collection. The data were analyzed with Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The result revealed that sustainable occupation significantly relates to forest resource utilization in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State. Based on the findings and conclusion, it was recommended, among others, that adequate programme should be carried out to sensitize rural people on the need to avoid environmentally unhealthy occupation for the good of the environmental and human beings.
