Moral Values and Crime Vulnerability among Secondary School Students in Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria

Abstract

The main purpose of the study was to investigate moral values and crime vulnerability among secondary school students in Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. Three objectives, research questions and hypotheses guided the study. The research design adopted for this study was correlational. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 568 SS2 students from a population of 1,136 SS2 students in public secondary schools in Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. A questionnaire titled “Moral Values and Crime Vulnerability Questionnaire” was used for data gathering. A pilot study was conducted on a sample of 100 participants and an internal consistency coefficient of .89 was obtained using Cronbach alpha reliability. The hypotheses were tested using simple regression and multiple regression, at .05 level of significance. The results showed that secondary school students with strong empathy and self-control predicted crime vulnerability. It is recommended that counsellors should enlighten students on the consequences of criminal behaviours.
