Employee Involvement and Performance of Dockworkers in Maritime Sector of the Niger Delta Region, Nigeria

Abstract

The study investigated how employee involvement in decision-making and collaborative problem-solving affected dockworkers’ performance as evaluated by productivity and service quality in the maritime industry of Niger Delta Region, Nigeria.  The study design used was cross-sectional survey. 1,004 employees made up the study’s population. Structured questionnaire was the instrument used for the collection of data. The sample size of 270 employees was arrived at using the Taro Yamane formula. The respondents were chosen using the stratified sampling approach. Data was analyzed using spearman correlation and multiple regression to test the hypotheses. The findings indicated that every aspect of employee participation significantly and favourably affects dockworkers’ performance in the maritime industry. It was recommended, among others, that maritime companies in the Niger Delta should first increase dockworkers’ participation in decision-making by establishing formal consultative forums.
