Abstract

This study investigated ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence and administrative effectiveness among confidential secretaries in Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA), Katsina State, Nigeria, with specific attention to two components of ethical and responsible artificial intelligence (AI) use: data privacy and security, and human oversight and responsible decision-making. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population comprised the entire thirty-seven (37) confidential secretaries in FUDMA, and census sampling was used. Data were collected using a structured, validated instrument, tagged Ethical AI Use and Administrative Effectiveness Questionnaire, rated on a four-point Likert scale. Research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation. Findings showed that confidential secretaries reported a high extent of data privacy and security practice and a high extent of human oversight and responsible decision-making in their administrative work, while administrative effectiveness recorded a more moderate cluster mean of 2.61, reflecting a self-reported gap in the timely completion of administrative tasks. It is recommended, among other things, that FUDMA management institutionalize regular, structured training on data privacy and security for confidential secretaries, and formalize verification and review protocols to strengthen human oversight of AI-assisted administrative decisions.
