Determinants of Teachers’ Implementation of Social Studies Curriculum Contents in Upper Basic Education in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the teachers’ implementation of curriculum contents in the teaching of Social Studies in upper basic level in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. Two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Literature review was carried out based on the variables under study. Survey research design was utilized. Census was used in selecting the 69 respondents sampled for the study. A validated 18 items, four point modified likert scale questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The instrument was titled Teachers Implementation of Social Studies Curriculum Contents Questionnaire (TISCQ). The reliability estimate of the instrument was 0.91 using Cronbach Alpha reliability method. Data was analyzed using the One Way Analysis of Variance and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The result of the study revealed that there is a significant influence of teachers’ teaching method on social studies teaching. Also, there is a significant relationship between availability of teaching-learning resources and social studies teaching. It was recommended that teachers should know the nature of the subject matter to be taught and be conversant with it to enable them determine the most suitable teaching method/methods to be used in a given lesson.
