Abstract

Menopause is a normal midlife event that occurs in women signifying the end of menstruation and the cessation of a woman’s reproductive ability. Eventhough it is a natural aspect of aging, many women report varying challenges during this phase. This study examines the challenges and coping strategies of menopausal women in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. 300 women were randomly selected from schools, churches, ministries and private organisations within the local government for the study. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. Descriptive statistics, frequency, percentages and ANOVA were used in answering the research questions and testing the two hypotheses. The result of the study showed that the major challenges of menopausal women are vaginal dryness, hot flashes and insomnia, while the major coping strategies include maintaining a healthy body weight, managing blood pressure and exercising. There was no significant difference in the challenges and coping strategies of menopausal women on the basis of age. Based on the findings, the study recommended that both younger and menopausal women should be enlightened through the media, seminars, conferences and publications on what to expect and how to manage this inevitable phase of their life, so as to ensure an enriched and healthy life.
