Professional Development Opportunities: A Tool for Enhancing Secondary School Teachers’ Job Performance

Abstract

The quality of education in any nation is directly tied to the competence and effectiveness of its teaching workforce. However, various challenges hinder the effectiveness of secondary school teachers in performing their duties, thereby negatively impacting their job performance. Key among these challenges are inadequate infrastructure, limited resources, large class sizes, low salaries, and inadequate professional development opportunities. This paper focuses on professional development opportunities as a pivotal tool for enhancing teachers’ instructional effectiveness in secondary schools in Nigeria. It explores the concepts of teachers’ job performance and professional development opportunities. Additionally, the paper highlights the importance of professional development for secondary school teachers; the challenges associated with secondary school teachers’ professional development and suggest strategies to address these issues. The study concludes that professional development is indispensable for boosting teachers’ job performance and recommends significant investment in continuous learning opportunities to empower teachers and enhance their effectiveness.
