Abstract
An effective parenting requires both care and guidance to the child. Children are a very special gift to any nation; hence, their nurturing must be carried out in ways that reflect the goals, values, and aspirations of the society. The quality of parenting has a direct impact on the child’s emotional, social, and moral development. While many parents may find it difficult to raise their children properly due to socio-economic pressures, changing societal norms, and personal challenges, others may be confused about the most suitable parenting style to adopt. In such situations, the services of professional counsellors can be instrumental in helping parents gain insight into effective strategies for child-rearing. This paper, therefore, examines the concepts of counselling, parenting, and the major types of parenting styles. It further explores the role and objectives of effective parenting, essential skills required by parents, parental responsibilities, and the potential consequences of ineffective or harmful parenting practices. The implications of these issues for counselling are also discussed. The paper argues that authoritative or democratic parenting style fosters balanced child’s development, and recommends that parents should cultivate a trusting, supportive, and communicative relationship with their children to ensure their holistic growth.
