Abstract
This study investigated psychological factors as predictors of marital abuse among married couples in Oyo state. This study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Two hundred participants were selected within Oyo state using stratified random sampling technique. Three research questions were answered using multiple regression analysis and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The findings revealed, among others, a positive relationship between anger (r = .231), self-esteem (r = .209) and marital abuse. The two variables studied jointly accounted for 11.3% of variance in the prediction of marital abuse among the participants. The independent variables made positive relative contribution to marital abuse in the following order: anger contributed most to the prediction of marital abuse among married couples in Oyo state (β = .239, t = 4.338), followed by self-esteem (β = .136, t = 2.319). Based on this finding, it is recommended that workshop on positive self-esteem and anger management should be organized to curb marital abuse.
